So, it’s a crisp fall day and you’re tailgating before the Ohio State – Michigan football game. As you chomp down on your favorite snacks, you are overcome by pain in one of your teeth. Immediately, you’re wondering why it is hurting. Don’t fret, though. There are answers and temporary relief available until you can visit your Norwalk dentist.
What Causes a Toothache?
Inside your teeth is a network of arteries, veins, and nerves. These parts make your tooth sensitive to pressure, temperature changes, and infection. Although not the sole source of toothaches, certain bacteria excreted in your mouth eat through the enamel on your teeth, and get inside to those hidden parts, causing inflammation and infection. In addition, here are a few other things that can contribute to tooth pain.
- Wedged Food – Food stuck between your teeth causes problems over time, due to plaque buildup.
- Trauma to Teeth – Injuries or grinding of your teeth can have lasting effects, causing chips or misalignments, which can affect your ability to properly remove bacteria.
- Sinus Infection – Sometimes a sinus infection can cause pain in your teeth because of increased pressure.
How Can You Address Your Tooth Pain Fast?
Tooth pain can stop you in your tracks, making it almost impossible to function normally. If you can’t get in to see your Norwalk dentist immediately, you still need some effective ways to ease the pain until you can schedule a visit.
- Salt Rinse – If you’re tailgating, more than likely, you’ve got some salt handy. A quick remedy is to warm up some water, and slowly add the salt while stirring. Sea salt is recommended, but if regular “table salt” is all you have, then use that. Next, rinse with the solution. It’s best to do this 4-5 times daily. Rinsing helps with gum pain, and removing foreign food items that may be wedged in your gums.
- Clove Oil – An essential oil, it contains a naturally occurring ingredient called eugenol that helps to reduce the chances of infection, while lessening the pain. Just apply a small amount to a tissue or cotton swab and gently apply it to the affected area.
- Rinse with Hydrogen Peroxide – This helps kill bacteria and take the edge off the pain. Rinse with the hydrogen peroxide solution and spit it out.
What Should You Do Next?
The above remedies are temporary. If experiencing tooth pain, get in to see your dentist as soon as possible. A toothache is a sign of a serious problem that has gotten to a point where it demands attention. Before the situation gets worse, contact Sommers Family Dentistry to nip it in the bud.
